Melbourne Heart Football Club was praised today by Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King for its part in campaigning for organ and tissue donation.

The club was awarded $29,000 in round five of the DonateLife Community Awareness Grants to undertake activities to promote DonateLife Week 2012.

Ms King is attending a match in Melbourne today between Melbourne Heart and the Central Coast Mariners which is a DonateLife-themed game.

Heart goalie Clint Bolton is the DonateLife ambassador for the club and features in a 30-second community service announcement developed as part of grant funding and played during the match.

Ms King told the crowd at the match Melbourne Heart deserved high praise for taking on itself to assist the campaign to lift rates of organ and tissue donation in Australia.

“I want to urge you all to make sure you seriously consider the issues of organ and tissue donation because it is all about saving lives,” Ms King told the crowd.

“The real key is to have a conversation within your family and among your friends so that they know what your wishes are about organ and tissue donation.

“We have made great progress in organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Australia.

“Last year 1001 people benefitted from the transplantation of organs and tissue from 337 donors. That is great but we need to improve on it.

“The fantastic involvement of Melbourne Heart and Clint Bolton will certainly help and I thank them for it. They are really showing they do have a generous ‘heart’.

“I commend the club for this important initiative in the interests of saving more Australian lives through organ and tissue donation.”
