The Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon, said the Australian Government is funding 20 new services that will provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and their babies with better access to vital health care.
“The $4.5 million investment will establish 10 new child and maternal health services in New South Wales, two in the Northern Territory, five in Queensland and three in Tasmania.
“We know these services are vital to deliver health support to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mums and their babies get the best head start in life,” Mr Snowdon said
Participants will have improved access in the important early years to antenatal and postnatal care, essential information about baby care, practical advice and assistance with breastfeeding, nutrition and parenting.
The Australian Government has established 76 mothers and babies services around the nation the $90 million New Directions Mothers and Babies Services program.
“This announcement builds on the Labor Government’s commitment to halve the gap in mortality rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children within a decade.
“We are making progress, the latest Productivity Commission report on Indigenous Disadvantage shows child mortality rates have been slashed by 48 percent over the past 20 years, outpacing the decline in non-Indigenous child mortality.
“This is a great outcome and we look forward to progressing further with these new programs,” Mr Snowdon said.
The New Directions Mothers and Babies Services program is part of the Indigenous Early Childhood Development National Partnership Agreement signed in 2008.
This partnership commits $564 million of joint Australian Government, and state and territory government funding over six years to tackle the needs of Indigenous children in their early years.
