The Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon, today visited the Tharawal Aboriginal Medical Service in Sydney to launch a Community Expo Day highlighting a new healthier lifestyle program called lively Djuarli.

Mr Snowdon said Djurali means Live Well and the Live Healthily in Dharawal program is aimed at helping people in the local community live healthier lifestyles.

“Today the Healthy Community Expo will feature a new, locally developed program, Live Healthily in Dharawal to reduce the prevalence of tobacco smoking and improving levels of healthy nutrition and physical activity.”

Mr Snowdon said the Live Longer! event is one of 60 funded by the Australian Government and being held across urban, regional, rural and remote areas of the country this year.

“The Live Longer! activities are locally organised so that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people conduct their own health promotion — designing, developing and distributing health messages for their own communities.

“In this way, messages are delivered in more meaningful, practical ways to counter particular concerns and health priorities of communities, as well as being relevant to local culture.”
Mr Snowdon said the Australian Government had funded a new regional tobacco co-ordinator and a healthy lifestyle worker to create a new Tharawal regional Tackling Smoking and Healthy Lifestyle team.

He said the team is are part of the Australian Government's national network of regional teams across working 57 regions in Indigenous communities on chronic disease and anti-smoking campaigns.

“Smoking causes disproportionate harm to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with smoking being responsible for every one in five deaths.”

“The Australian Government is not going to stand back when death and disease caused by smoking can be prevented.

“That’s why we’re continuing to tackle smoking and chronic disease by implementing locally tailored, nationally consistent programs to combat tobacco use,” Mr Snowdon said.
