The Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon, said an additional 38 health staff are being funded across Victoria this financial year, to help close the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

The boost to Victoria’s Indigenous health workforce will benefit 28 Victorian health services and is part of the Australian Government’s $805.5 million Indigenous Chronic Disease Package.

Mr Snowdon made the announcement while on a visit to the Bunurong Health Service, south of Melbourne, to meet five new staff being provided under the package.

“This Aboriginal Medical Service is receiving an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander outreach worker, a regional tobacco coordinator, a tobacco action worker and two healthy lifestyle workers.

“These are just five of 38 staff that will be employed across Victoria this year (see full list of organisations in table attached). This is a significant boost to Victorian workforce that will help local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people get timely access to the health services they need.

“We know that too many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians are dying and some of the biggest contributors are cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and respiratory diseases. Smoking alone accounts for around 20 per cent of all Indigenous deaths.

"The Australian Government’s Chronic Disease package is helping address these issues, and a key part of that is boosting the local health workforce.

“The Tackling Smoking and Healthy Lifestyle teams across Victoria will work to raise awareness of the health impacts of tobacco smoking and chronic disease in Indigenous communities, to promote and encourage positive and healthy lifestyles, quitting and smoke-free environments,” Mr Snowdon said.

“The new outreach workers will work with the local community to assist them to obtain access to health services and follow-up care, specialist services and community pharmacies,” Mr Snowdon said.

A full list of organisations is attached in a separate table.
