The Gillard Government is delivering on its commitment to lift Tony Abbott’s reckless cap on GP training places and double the number of GPs entering training according to a newly released report.

“Training the next generation of GPs is an investment in our future,” Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said.

“We lifted Tony Abbott’s reckless cap on GP training places and this report shows that we are on-track to double the number of GPs entering training from 600 to 1200 in 2014.

“Families can be reassured that the Gillard Government is delivering better health care to communities around Australia and today’s report show’s that we’re half way to doubling the number of GP entering training.

“Getting more doctors in the pipeline now will lay the foundations for a sustainable health system that will meet the healthcare needs of future generations.

“In particular, Labor is delivering more doctors, to more communities around the country with over half of the training places offered in 2011 based in rural, regional or remote Australia.

“Doctors who train in rural and regional areas often stay on to live and practise in those areas when their training finishes, meaning more doctors for the bush.”

“Applications and acceptances for the Australian General Practice Training program continue to grow each year demonstrating that not only do we have more doctors entering the system but we’ve got more graduates wanting to become GPs.

Minister Roxon said the report also showed an increase in the amount of time GP registrars are training in Indigenous health.

The 2010-11 Annual Report of General Practice Education and Training Limited (GPET) was tabled in the Parliament yesterday. GPET is a wholly owned Australian Government company
