The Australian and Victorian Governments have agreed on the implementation plan to develop the $1 billion Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon welcomed the agreement that will see the Gillard Government provide $426 million towards the billion dollar Centre.

“We have made great advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, with the five year survival rate now more than 61%. But, cancer is still the leading cause of the burden of disease in Australia and there is much more to be done,” Minister Roxon said.

“The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre is a key component to the Gillard Government’s record $2.5 billion investment to improve the detection and treatment of cancer.

“This billion dollar world class cancer centre will lead the way in translating ground-breaking research into new and innovative cancer treatments for Victorian families.”

The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre will include:

  • 160 multi-day beds
  • 42-bed critical care unit
  • 110 same day beds
  • 24 bed clinical trial unit
  • 8 Medihotel suites
  • 8 operating theatres
  • radiation oncology bunkers
“Together with seven other regional cancer centre projects in Victoria, this is yet another example of how the Gillard Government is committed to helping more Victorian’s access the cancer treatments they need, when they need it.”

The Commonwealth is providing $426 million towards the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre project, which makes this project the largest single project funded by the Gillard Government’s $5 billion Health and Hospitals Fund. The Victorian Government is also providing $426 million and additional contributions are being provided by organisations occupying the VCCC and philanthropic donations.

The Gillard Government will soon provide its first payment of almost $100 million to the Victorian Government and plans to provide a total of $233 million this financial year.
