A key pillar of the Gillard Government’s health reforms, the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority, moved a step closer today with legislation to establish the statutory authority passing the House of Representatives.
“The Independent Hospital Pricing Authority will deliver a more sustainable, efficient and transparent health system for all Australians,” Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said.
“Taking the politics out of health funding is a key pillar of the Gillard Government’s historic health reforms. The Independent Hospital Pricing Authority – at arms length from the Government - will deliver this.
“National efficient pricing will improve hospital funding and drive better performance from hospitals.
“This is a major micro-economic reform that will drive efficiency through activity based funding and will be critical for fast growing areas of Australia, such as Western Sydney and South East Queensland, where the old system has struggled to keep pace with increased demands at a local level.
“We welcome the Opposition’s decision to support this legislation after they have tried to block every other health reform piece of legislation the Labor Government has put before the Parliament.
“Unlike Mr Abbott who ripped a billion dollars out of our hospitals, the Gillard Government is getting on with the job of delivering the resources that our health system needs.
“New data from the AIHW highlights how Labor’s National Health Reforms have invested billions of dollars extra into public hospitals and turned around years of neglect from Tony Abbott and the Coalition.
“Adjusted for inflation, Labor’s increase to public hospital spending over just three years is $2,718 million – or more than 117 times higher than what the Coalition invested.”
Dr Tony Sherbon is the Acting CEO of the interim IHPA which was established as an executive agency from 1st September 2011.
