More than 200 applications for health services in rural and regional Australia, totalling almost $3.4 billion, have been received under the Gillard Government’s latest Health and Hospitals Fund Regional Priority Round.

Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon and Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government Simon Crean welcomed the strong interest in the round from state and territory governments, community health organisations, and private groups and reminded applicants the funding process will be very competitive.

The $475 million available through this latest Health and Hospitals Fund Regional Priority Round will provide a further boost to many regional hospitals and health services, but given the Government has received requests for seven times this amount, not all can be successful.

Ministers Roxon and Crean said this latest round again recognised the Gillard Government’s commitment to regional Australia.

“Importantly, when this round is completed $2.9 billion, which is well over half of the total Fund, will go to vital projects in regional areas,” Minister Roxon said.

The primary focus of this funding round is to provide capital funding to projects in regional communities to support upgrades to health infrastructure, hospitals and to expand clinical training capacity of regional health and hospital services.

“This investment will build on the funding of $1.33 billion allocated to 63 HHF projects to improve a variety of regional health care services and training in the 2011 Budget, and the $560 million for regional cancer centres across Australia under the HHF Regional Cancer Centre Round,” Minister Crean said.

“We appreciate there is such strong interest in the round and it is important to note there is a transparent process for assessment of the applications,” Mr Crean said.

Proposals will be assessed by the independent HHF Advisory Board against the HHF evaluation criteria. The board’s advice will be considered by the Gillard Government during the 2012-13 Budget process.
