First Sod Turned for GP Super Clinic in Cockburn
The Cockburn community can look forward to more doctors, nurses and allied health professionals following the start of construction of the Cockburn GP Super Clinic.

25 October 2011Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon and Member for Fremantle Melissa Parke turned the first sod to mark the beginning of the construction process and the first step towards better healthcare for Cockburn.
“GP Super Clinics, like this one here in Cockburn, are part of the Gillard Government’s commitment to ensure that Australians can get the care they need closer to home,” Minister Roxon said.
“The Cockburn GP Super Clinic, which is being built on the corner of Beeliar Drive and Wentworth Parade Success, will be the centrepiece of the Cockburn Integrated Health and Community Facility.
“The Cockburn GP Super Clinic will provide integrated, multidisciplinary, team-based, patient-centred health services all under the one roof making accessing care easier for families,” Minister Roxon said.
The Member for Fremantle Melissa Parke said when the clinic construction is completed in 2013, families will benefit from team based care that will include GPs, nursing, physiotherapists, psychologists, diabetes educators, dieticians, exercise physiologists and an Aboriginal Health Worker.
“This GP Super Clinic represents an essential primary health resource in one of the fastest-growing parts of the metro area,” Ms Parke said.
“Supporting the next generation of local doctors will also be a key focus for the clinic that will provide training and education for medical students from Curtin University.
“The clinic is the result of a partnership between the Commonwealth Government which has contributed $6.65 million, the Cockburn City Council, which has contributed the land for the project, and the Fremantle GP Network.
"GP Super Clinics are designed to improve access to quality health care and are a significant investment in taking the pressure off our hospitals,” Ms Parke said.
The Gillard Government is investing $650 million to build more than 60 GP Super Clinics and invest in more than 400 infrastructure programs in GP clinics around the country. 33 GP Super Clinics are either open, delivering early services or under construction. In Western Australia, GP Super Clinics will also be established in Midland, Karratha, Northam, Rockingham and Wanneroo.
