Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon visited the school today to congratulate students and teachers on their selection.
“Teaching kids how to make healthy choices is an investment in our future,” Minister Roxon said.
“Getting kids involved in growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh food promotes healthy eating and healthy lifestyles that will see these kids grow into healthy adults.
“The kids at Beldon Primary School will now be able to get their hands dirty in the garden and get involved in growing fresh veggies.
“The Gillard Government is doing more than any other to keep Australians healthy and out of hospital – that’s why we have invested $872 million, the largest investment ever, in health prevention.”
The $12.8 million Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program aims to improve nutrition and develop lifelong healthy eating habits among children which is part of the Government’s commitment to preventive health.
Last week, Beldon Primary School was announced as one of 5 latest WA schools to receive funding through the program. Beldon will receive $60,000 to fund construction of its kitchen and garden infrastructure.
The fourth and final funding round brings the total number of participating schools in Australia to 178, including 24 in Western Australia. The Government has also announced another $1 million over three years to develop curriculum resources to support the program.
The Gillard Government has a strong track record of delivering important health services to the northern suburbs or Perth. Significant projects include:
- 52 new beds and a new elective surgery theatre fit out for the Joondalup Hospital ($26.75)
- $5 million for a new GP Super Clinic at Wanneroo
- $4.3 million for up to 336 additional clinical placements at Joondalup through ECU
