Residents in Midland will soon have better access to doctors, nurses and allied health professionals with the Midland GP Super Clinic reaching the mid-point of construction.

Inspecting the site today, Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said the Midland GP Super Clinic will deliver a range of health services under the one roof.

“GP Super Clinics, like this one here at Midland, are part of the Gillard Government’s commitment to ensure that Australians can get the care they need close to home,” Ms Roxon said.

“The progress here at the site of the Midland GP Super Clinic is quite exciting. In this great historic building we can see the Clinic is really taking shape, with the main steel structures - including stairways and upper and lower floors - in place and internal partitioning to form the clinical areas underway.

“The Midland GP Super Clinic has now reached the mid-point of construction and, when open, plans to offer a range of services including GP and nursing services, physiotherapists, psychologists, a mental health nurse, dentists, a podiatrist, dietician, diabetes educator, Aboriginal Health Workers and a pharmacist.

“The clinic will also operate a fully equipped day surgery and will have a particular focus on addressing high levels of smoking, obesity, circulatory system disease, musculoskeletal disease and Type 2 diabetes found in the community.

“Supporting the next generation of local doctors will be a key focus for the clinic that will provide training and education for medical, nursing and allied health students from Curtin University.

The Midland GP Super Clinic is being constructed in the former Midland Railway Workshops, a heritage-listed building, and is scheduled for completion in early 2012 with planned opening hours from 8.00am to 10.00pm, 7 days per week.

The Gillard Government has contributed $5 million towards the project, the Western Australian Government $5 million and the operator of the new clinic, Health Integra Pty Ltd, up to $2 million towards the project.

"GP Super Clinics are designed to improve access to quality health care in communities and are a significant investment in taking the pressure off our hospitals.”

The Gillard Government is investing $650 million to build more than 60 GP Super Clinics and invest in more than 400 infrastructure programs in GP clinics around the country. 33 GP Super Clinics are either open, delivering early services or under construction. In Western Australia, GP Super Clinics will also be established in Cockburn, Karratha, Northam, Rockingham and Wanneroo.
