National health reform will deliver 52 beds for patients at Joondalup Health Campus, providing a major boost for services in the northern suburbs of Perth.

Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon today outlined the details of the $26.75 million funding boost to provide better sub acute, emergency department and elective surgery care at Joondalup. This is part of the $351 million delivered to WA from the national health reform agreement.

“Providing local communities, like the northern suburbs, with better health services closer to home, is a key focus for national health reform,” Minister Roxon said.

“Visiting the hospital today I was able to hear first hand from doctors and nurses how these projects will help the hospital to care for more patients and reduce waiting times in the growing northern suburbs.

“The new beds will help rehabilitation patients to recover from major illnesses or operations, and will provide better care for mental health patients outside the emergency department. The new theatre will help patients get surgery quicker.”

The investments in Joondalup Health Campus are:

    • $22.1 million to establish and fit out a 30 bed adult rehabilitation unit
    • $3.2 million for a 22 bed mental health unit
    • $1.45 million to fit out a twelfth operating theatre.
“It is expected the new theatre will be completed next year and the two projects for the 52 beds will also commence,” Minister Roxon said.

“These projects are examples of how the Commonwealth and WA governments are working together to provide better health care through national health reform.”

The Government also announced that a funding agreement had been reached with the WA Government and Edith Cowan University to establish the $22 million Wanneroo GP Super Clinic.

Since 2007, the Commonwealth has committed $8.34 billion in new funding for Western Australia’s health and hospital system through national health reform.

Other examples of national health reform projects to benefit the northern suburbs of Perth include:
    • $5 million for a new GP Super Clinic at Wanneroo
    • $4.3 million for up to 336 additional clinical placement days at Joondalup through ECU
    • 23 GPs and specialists in training GP practices and the Joondalup Hospital.
    • 15 specialist training program positions at Joondalup Health Campus
    • Infrastructure grants for medical practices at Edgewater, Ocean Reef and Alexander Heights
    • $2 million for infrastructure for the University of Notre Dame to train clinicians.
    • $410,000 for preventative health programs in the City of Wanneroo
