Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, today welcomed the appointment of Richard Crookes Construction to build the New England North West Regional Cancer Centre.

“This is an important step in the construction of the New England North West Regional Cancer Centre, which when completed will provide an enormous increase in local cancer services," said Ms Roxon.

“The Gillard Government is delivering cancer services closer to where patients live and where they are needed.

“The New England North West Regional Cancer Centre will provide cancer services for patients closer to home, which will improve treatment and reduce travel times for patients and their families.

When completed, the new facility will include:

      • 2 bunkers, with one linear accelerator operating initially and provision for a second linear accelerator,
      • an increase in chemotherapy services in Tamworth and Armidale,
      • cancer outpatient/consultation clinics and Clinical Trial Centre,
      • a CT scanner in Tamworth, and
      • a 14 bed accommodation facility.
The total project cost is $41.7 million, with $31.7 million being provided by the Commonwealth.
