The Hon Senator Kim Carr MP
Senator for Victoria
11 October 2011Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said the $4.9 million facility being built in Percy Street would deliver extended hours of service for greater access to primary health care in the community.
“GP Super Clinics are a key part of the Australian Government’s national health reforms, providing a stronger primary health system,” Minister Roxon said.
“They provide integrated multidisciplinary, team-based, patient-centered health services in a single location, bringing together GPs, nurses, visiting medical specialists, allied health professionals and other health care providers and services.”
Duty Senator for Wannon, Kim Carr said the new Portland GP Super Clinic will house general practitioners and nursing and allied health professionals and offer integrated chronic disease management services.
“The clinic will also support the future primary care workforce by providing training and education for medical, nursing and allied health professionals in a team-based environment,” Senator Carr said.
The Portland GP Super Clinic project has been developed by a consortium led by Portland District Health, that includes Deakin University, Greater Green Triangle GP, Education and Training and Otway Division of General Practice.
It is being built by England Construction Co Pty Ltd and work is expected to be completed around mid 2012.
"GP Super Clinics are designed to improve access to quality health care in communities and are a significant investment in taking the pressure off our hospitals.”
The Gillard Government is investing $650 million to build more than 60 GP Super Clinics and invest in more than 400 infrastructure programs in GP clinics around the country. 32 GP Super Clinics are either open, delivering early services or under construction.
