The first batch of medical students to study at the newly-opened Western Centre for Health Research and Education at Sunshine Hospital were welcomed today by the Minister for Health and Ageing and local Federal Member for Gellibrand, Nicola Roxon.
“This new world class facility will mean more doctors, nurses and allied health professionals are trained in Western Melbourne and that’s great news for the local community,” said Minister Roxon.
“This is the first centre of excellence for teaching and research in medicine and health science in the western region of Melbourne with 144 medical students already doing some or all of their training through the Centre.
“Training doctors, nurses and physiotherapists locally means they stay and work in the West and that gives locals access to better care close to home - this is just another example of the Gillard Government investing in our health workforce so that it
can deliver now and into the future.”
Minister Roxon said the new facility will be a training ground for students from the University of Melbourne and Victoria University in a range of settings including surgical, obstetric, emergency, paediatric and aged care streams.
“It will also support high quality clinical research aimed at providing improvements in patient care,” Minister Roxon said.
“A new, high-fidelity simulation laboratory to boost clinical and surgical skills training, as well as a lecture and teaching space for students has been provided at the Western Centre.
“This Centre is a fine example of what a collaborative partnership can deliver with Western Health, Victoria University and the University of Melbourne coming together to provide students with a world class, shared learning facility. The Victorian Government committed $28.6 million to the project, the two universities $8 million each and the Commonwealth Government $7 million.”
The Gillard Government is delivering health services in the West that matter to locals including:
- New clinical school at Notre Dame University, Werribee Mercy Hospital
- Melbourne West GP Super Clinic
- Sunshine Hospital - 6 extra short say beds
- Western Hospital - 4 extra short stay beds
- Williamstown Hospital – new operating theatre and increased sterilising department capacity
- Werribee Mercy Hospital – 30 new sub acute beds, a new community rehabilitation service and additional services in palliative care and rehabilitation services
- $7.5m for additional elective surgery and emergency department throughput in Western Health
- 12 new specialist training places across the West
- 9 new GP Registrars across the West
- 6 primary care infrastructure grants to local doctors.
