National health reform is delivering for the residents of Brisbane’s northern suburbs with six additional new rehabilitation beds announced today at Brighton Health Campus. This builds on the previous commitment of 44 additional subacute beds to be built on site. 32 of these have been opened to date.

Deputy Prime Minister and local Member for Lilley, Wayne Swan, and Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, inspected the new facilities today at the Brighton Health Campus, which is collocated with the Eventide Aged Care Facility.

“This unit is a massive boost for rehabilitation services on the north side of Brisbane, helping more patients to recover from major illnesses or operations,” Deputy Prime Minister Swan said today.

“This is great news for residents in the north who can get the right rehabilitation they need, much closer to home.”

Minister Roxon said these beds, funded through the Commonwealth’s 2008 subacute investments, will be boosted by the new health agreement reached through COAG.

“Giving hospitals the resources they need for more beds and better care is a key priority for national health reform,” Minister Roxon said

“We are now building on our 2008 investments with an additional six new rehabilitation beds. This brings the total to 50 rehabilitation beds for Brighton that the Commonwealth has funded.

“These six additional beds will open this financial year and are part of an expansion of 1,300 subacute beds across Australia. So far through health reform over 220 extra beds for Queensland hospitals and health centres have been announced.

“Rehabilitation beds are important for improving the health outcome for patients, reducing the need for readmission to hospital and freeing up other acute beds in hospitals.

“Today’s announcement is another example of how the Gillard and Bligh Governments are working together to provide better health care for Queenslanders, closer to home through national health reform.”

Since 2007, the Commonwealth has committed $16.1 billion in new funding for Queensland’s health and hospital system through national health reform.

Other examples of national health reform projects to benefit the northern suburbs of Brisbane include:
    • Six new paediatric short stay beds and four additional paediatric outpatient clinics at the Redcliffe Hospital emergency department
    • 20 short stay paediatric beds and a new 12 bay paediatric emergency department at Prince Charles Hospital
    • $10 million Redcliffe GP Super Clinic
    • Brisbane North as a lead implementation site for e-health records
