Dr Tony Sherbon has been appointed the acting Chief Executive Officer of the interim Independent Hospital Pricing Authority (IHPA), starting today (1 September 2011).
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, said today when announcing the appointment, that Dr Sherbon would bring a wide experience of public hospital systems in several states to this critical role.
“Dr Sherbon has previously been the head of the South Australian and the ACT health departments, has also headed two area health services in New South Wales, and has worked in public hospitals as a medical administrator. Most recently, he has been the Deputy CEO of the National Health Reform Transition Office,” Ms Roxon said.
The establishment of the interim IHPA from today gives effect to a key element of the National Health Reform Agreement, less than a month after the agreement was signed by all states and territories and the Commonwealth.
Under the National Health Reform Agreement the interim IHPA will be responsible for critical aspects of a new nationally consistent approach to activity-based funding of public hospitals, until legislation is passed to create the IHPA as a statutory authority.
The interim IHPA has been established as an executive agency from 1st September 2011.
On 24 August, legislation was introduced to Parliament to establish the IHPA as a statutory body.
“These developments, taken together with the announcement at COAG that Mr Shane Solomon will be the chair and Mr Jim Birch the deputy chair of the IHPA, show rapid progress to implement key elements of the national health reforms that will underpin a new national approach to activity based funding of public hospitals from 1 July next year,” Ms Roxon said.
