Dr William (Bill) Coote has been appointed the Acting Director of the Professional Services Review, Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon announced today.

The Professional Services Review (PSR) is an independent statutory authority that examines cases where health practitioners may have inappropriately rendered or initiated services that attract a Medicare Benefits Schedule rebate, or inappropriately prescribed under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

“I’m pleased to welcome Dr Coote to the Director’s role where he will manage the PSR’s accountability process and help ensure Australia’s health system continues to be both high quality and sustainable,” Ms Roxon said.

“Dr Coote has extensive experience in health policy, training and practice.

“He was previously the Secretary-General of the Australian Medical Association, the inaugural CEO of General Practice Education and Training Limited, and has operated a general practice in south Brisbane.

“I’d also like to thank his predecessor, Dr Tony Webber, for his contribution in the role over the past six years, and wish him well for the future.”

Dr William Coote’s three-month tenure begins 14 August. A permanent candidate for the position is being considered by Cabinet and will be announced in the coming months.
