Brisbane patients seen at the Princess Alexandra Hospital will benefit from national health reform through a new $5.8 million investment into the latest surgical equipment that will mean more elective surgery will be performed at the hospital that was announced today.
Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon explained the announcement includes a $3.3 million hybrid operating theatre and $2.5 million day procedure unit for Princess Alexandra.
“The Gillard Government is delivering the resources that hospitals need to provide patients more services using the latest medical technology,” said Minister Roxon.
“This new vascular hybrid operating theatre will allow surgeons to complete operations, such as repairing the body’s vital arteries, using the most advanced imaging technology.
“The surgery will be equipped with an interventional C-arm – a piece of technology that provides x-ray and CT scanning within the theatre environment – as well as a specialised operating table.
“With 18 per cent of Australians now suffering a form of cardiovascular disease, the new facility will become a valuable addition to the existing operating theatres at PAH.
“A further $2.5 million will be invested in equipment for the Day Procedure Unit, which will have the double benefit of allowing more surgery to be performed in the unit, which will in turn free up operating time in the main theatres.”
Queensland Health Minister Geoff Wilson welcomed the national health reform investments.
“Queensland has lobbied strongly for this extra funding to help us deliver faster, better care for patients in our hospitals,” he said.
“The hybrid theatre will allow a team of surgeons and radiologists to work together to perform surgery which is less invasive, resulting in less pain, fewer complications and a shorter recovery period for patients.
“The new day procedure unit will help reduce waiting times by allowing a rapid turnaround on minor operations including biopsies, simple orthopaedic procedures or urology procedures such as cystoscopy.”
Local member for Griffith Kevin Rudd said the investments were further examples of the benefits flowing to the Queensland community from National Health Reform.
“Our Government has committed $6.1 billion of new investments to Queensland since 2007 for hospitals and health infrastructure,” Mr Rudd said.
“Importantly, this upgrade to the Princess Alexandra Hospital will mean that more Brisbane locals and Queenslanders generally can get access to world-leading surgery.”
Local member for Moreton Graham Perrett welcomed the local investment and said the two new procedure rooms in the Day Procedure Unit would help provide faster turnaround for elective procedures.
“The two new procedure rooms in particular will help the PAH to treat more patients faster, and that’s a good thing for patients,” Mr Perrett said.
