Port Macquarie residents will soon have better access to GPs and allied health professionals following the signing of a $7 million agreement with Rural and Metropolitan Health (Port Macquarie) Pty Ltd to establish the Port Macquarie GP Super Clinic.

Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, today welcomed the signing of the $7 million agreement as a boost to health care in Port Macquarie.

“This GP Super Clinic will deliver better access to health services for locals in a single, convenient location,” Minister Roxon said.

“The Gillard Government wants to make it easier for all Australians to see and contact a doctor and GP Super Clinics around the country are making this happen.

“Rural and Metropolitan Health (Port Macquarie) has a strong track record delivering high quality health services, as the operator of the Port Stephens GP Super Clinic.

“The Port Macquarie GP Super Clinic will provide a new integrated, multidisciplinary, team-based, patient-centred healthcare under one roof.

“Patients will be able to access care from GPs, practice nurses, nurse practitioners, allied health professionals and visiting medical specialists, as well as access pharmacy, radiology and pathology services.”

“The Port Macquarie Clinic will have a strong emphasis on chronic disease and preventive health care as well as dietetics, psychology services, paediatric care, antenatal care, women’s health checks, men’s health checks, sexual health services and home and nursing home visits.

“The Gillard Government is making a significant investment in the GP Super Clinics program and has committed $528 million to build 64 GP Super Clinics around Australia. 31 GP Super Clinics are now either open, providing early services or under construction

“We have also funded around 425 Primary Care Infrastructure Grants to upgrade and extend existing general practices, primary care and community health services, and Aboriginal Medical Services."
