Queensland patients will benefit from increased access to more doctors, nurses and allied health workers with the announcement today of a $51 million investment into 35 capital projects and additional support projects to improve clinical education and training infrastructure across the state.

Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, today announced the first 20 projects and said that the new clinical training infrastructure consists of new training facilities at Universities, hospitals and health care facilities, as well as new equipment such as simulation equipment, dental chairs and video conferencing facilities.

“These infrastructure projects will enable us to train more doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in places where we need them,” said Minister Roxon.

“The Gillard Government is delivering a highly skilled health workforce that is the critical backbone of our health system.

‘We are ensuring training occurs closer to where patients live - at least twenty percent of these infrastructure projects are outside the usual major teaching hospitals.

“Fifty per cent of these projects will deliver vital infrastructure to rural and regional Australia including construction of new clinical training facilities and student accommodation to support rural students”, said Minister Roxon.

The Minister made the announcement at the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane where over $2.1 million has been invested in three vital infrastructure projects. These projects will further support student training in medicine, physiotherapy, nursing and dietetics.

“The Government is investing in the Wesley so that locals can benefit from more doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

“The $2.1 million will be used to expand existing educational facilities and construct a new training facility for health professionals at the Wesley Hospital, a joint venture with Unitingcare Health and the Universities of Queensland and Bond.

“This capital investment is in addition to the $3.56M of clinical training money that will provide an additional 6653 clinical training days at the hospital,” said Minister Roxon.
