Australian Government Delivers More Dental Services for Adelaide

19 May 2011Patients in Adelaide will benefit from more dental services with the opening of the $2.1 million, 10-chair teaching dental clinic at the Adelaide Dental Hospital, said Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon and Member for Adelaide Kate Ellis.
In a significant increase in dental clinical training for South Australia, the clinic, which was officially opened today, and the Government’s investments will mean an extra 52,500 hours of clinical training over the next five years for undergraduate dental and oral health students in South Australia.
“This new 10 chair facility will mean that patients can receive dental services while new dentists are being trained, which means more services and an huge increase in training for new dentists in South Australia,” said Ms Roxon.
“The Government is making it easier for people to see a health professional when they need one and the dental clinic means an expansion in clinical training for dental students – that’s good news for patients receiving services now and the expansion of training facilities is good news for South Australian dental services into the future.
“The Gillard Government has provided $2.1 million to build the clinic which will support local training with the University of Adelaide School of Dentistry seeing a 60 per cent increase in student numbers since 2003.
“The Commonwealth Government also gave a $53.1 million boost to dental services in the Budget with the establishment of a voluntary dental internship program which will deliver 150 intern places over 3 years that will expand dental graduates’ basic skills and improve community access to dental services.
Kate Ellis, Member for Adelaide and Minister for Employment Participation and Childcare and Minister for the Status of Women, welcomed the benefits for patients.
“This expanded dental training capacity means more services for local families in Adelaide,” said Ms Ellis.
“The Government is delivering more doctors, more nurses and more dentists for Adelaide and South Australia,” said Ms Ellis.
The Government is also providing an additional $1.68 million to the University of Adelaide’s School of Dentistry through the Dental Training – Expanding Rural Placement’s Program to establish an eight-chair Rural Clinical Training Centre in Whyalla, South Australia.
A further $586,846 will also be provided to the university to support and extend rural training placements.
