March 2011 Medicare Statistics

In the March quarter 2011, a total of $4.0 billion was paid in Medicare benefits for 78.7 million services. This represented 3.5 services and about $175 in benefits for every Australian.

In the March quarter 2011, a total of $4.0 billion was paid in Medicare benefits for 78.7 million services. This represented 3.5 services and about $175 in benefits for every Australian.

During the quarter, a record 75.9 per cent of all services were bulk billed, up 0.8 of a percentage point on the December quarter 2010 and up 1.4 percentage points on the March quarter 2010.

Bulk billing of GP services reached 80.2 per cent, almost reaching the 1996 record level of 80.8 per cent. This represents a rise of 0.4 of a percentage point on the previous quarter and 0.6 a percentage point on the same quarter last year.

State by state, bulk billing of GP attendances in the March quarter 2011 was:

  • NSW, up 0.7 of a percentage point compared with the March quarter 2010, to 84.9 per cent
  • Victoria up 0.9 of a percentage point to 79.3 per cent
  • Queensland up 0.7 of a percentage point to 79.9 per cent
  • South Australia up 0.2 of a percentage point to 78.6 per cent
  • Northern Territory up 2.9 percentage points to 69.0 per cent
  • Western Australia down 0.6 of a percentage point to 71.9 per cent
  • Tasmania down 0.1 of a percentage point to 74.7 per cent
  • ACT down 1.2 percentage points to 45.8 per cent.
