Young people and families in Colac will benefit from a new Youth Health Hub, with a $1.2 million investment by the Gillard Government to reform and modernise local hospital and health facilities.

Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Wayne Swan said this project will greatly improve access to quality health services, while also stimulating the local Colac economy and creating jobs.

“Finding room in this very responsible Budget for expanded health services has been difficult, but shows what a high priority it is for the Gillard Government,’’ Mr Swan said.

Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, announced today that the Government would provide the funding for the Youth Health Hub at Colac through the 2011-12 Budget.

“This project is part of Labor’s ongoing commitment to improving regional health services and helping to support young people and their families,” Ms Roxon said.

“We want to make sure that young people can access services when they need them and this new Youth Hub will deliver benefits for young people across the Colac community,” said Ms Roxon.

Local Member for Corangamite Darren Cheeseman welcomed the new investment for Colac.

“Young people and their families in Colac can look forward to better health services, including better youth mental health services, as a result of the investments we are making.”

The $1.355 million project – Colac Area Health will contribute $155,000 – includes the construction of a new facility to provide integrated services to young people aged from 16 to 25 years with a drop in space, 3 consulting rooms, a meeting room and space for eleven staff members.

Minister Roxon said the Colac Youth Hub had been selected by the Government for funding through the Health and Hospitals Fund (HHF) regional priority round, from the applications assessed by the independent HHF Advisory Board as satisfying the funding requirements.

“These new projects and many other projects around Australia being funded from the Fund’s Regional Priority Round will help strengthen regional health and hospital services and build a better system for the future,” she said.

“Theses projects are part of the Government’s $5 billion commitment to health and hospital infrastructure as part of its national health reform agenda.’’
