The Gillard Government will deliver more doctors and nurses to Western Sydney – one of the fastest growing population centres in the country – with the completion of the Blacktown Hospital Clinical School Research and Education Centre.

Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon today toured the newly-completed School, Research & Education Centre with the Member for Greenway, Michelle Rowland, declaring it open for business.

“Western Sydney is one of the fastest growing centres in Australia and the Blacktown Clinical School will see an increase in the numbers of Doctors and nurses trained and working locally,” said Ms Roxon.

“The students will be trained in a world class facility and learn their practical skills among the communities of Western Sydney.

“The facilities will offer training opportunities for doctors as well as nursing and allied health students,” said Ms Roxon.

Member for Greenway Michelle Rowland said we want to make it easier for people to see a doctor or nurse when they need one and the new Clinical School will mean more doctors, nurses and allied health professionals on the ground where they’re needed in western Sydney region.

“There are currently 125 students training in Blacktown and Mount Druitt and this will increase to 150 next year,” said Ms Rowland.

The $20.6 million of Commonwealth funding for the new training facilities was made under round 1 of the $3.2 billion Health and Hospitals Fund (HHF) and the Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations’ Capital Development Pool. The University of Western Sydney also has contributed $4.5 million.

Ms Roxon said that the HHF was the single largest investment in health infrastructure ever made by an Australian Government.

“It is a key part of the Government’s reform agenda to reshape Australia’s health and aged care system for the future,” she said.

Ms Roxon also met with students at the University of Western Sydney’s School of Nursing at the Hawkesbury campus.
