Next Instalment of Funding For Royal Hobart Hospital
The next $50 million instalment of the Australian Government’s contribution to the construction of the new Women’s and Children’s Precinct of the Royal Hobart Hospital will be paid to the Tasmanian Government shortly.

Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon today announced the next $50 million instalment of the Gillard Government’s contribution to the construction of the new Women’s and Children’s Precinct of the Royal Hobart Hospital will be paid to the Tasmanian Government this week.
The payment follows the Australian Government’s acceptance of the Tasmanian Government’s progress report on the construction of the $180 million project, which forms part of the $565 million redevelopment of Tasmania’s flagship hospital.
“Today is an important milestone in the transformation of the Royal Hobart Hospital into a modern, world class facility and that’s good news for patients and the Hobart community,” said Ms Roxon.
“This $100 million investment in Royal Hobart Hospital is part of the Gillard Government’s commitment to give hospitals the resources they need to provide better care,” said Ms Roxon.
Ms Roxon said the performance milestone had been met, the redevelopment was on track and looked forward to working with the Tasmanian Government to deliver this important boost to health services for the community.
“It’s been important to focus early in construction on the hospital’s old existing infrastructure, which needs to be substantially upgraded for structural and safety reasons.
“I also thank the Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie MP, for his passionate advocacy to get this project off the ground – and the Member for Franklin, Julie Collins, for her tireless efforts in support of the Royal Hobart Hospital over a number of years,” Ms Roxon said.
The Gillard Government committed to providing $100 million towards the construction of the Women’s and Children’s Precinct as part of its post election agreement with Mr Wilkie. The first $50 million was paid in December 2010.
