Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon today toured the Ipswich GP Super Clinic and praised the local community for digging in and providing a helping hand during the recent flood crisis.
“The flood crisis showed us all that when communities stick together and help each other out they come out the other end even stronger,” Minister Roxon said.

Accompanied by local member Shayne Neumann MP, Minister Roxon took the time to commended staff at the clinic for their outstanding efforts in providing much needed medical assistance and support during January’s devastating floods.

“The Ipswich GP Super Clinic is absolutely critical to this community and the effort of the staff to ensure urgent care was provided during the floods not only took pressure off local hospital emergency departments but was a crucial source of support to those affected.

“Without the dedication of the Ipswich GP Super Clinic staff and staff from medical clinics across Queensland, many people would not have received the urgent treatment they needed,” Ms Roxon said.

“Of course, it isn’t just during disasters that GP Super Clinics are important. Every day GP Super Clinics around the country are making it easier for Australians to see a doctor closer to home.

“Keeping Australians well and out of hospital is a priority for the Gillard Government’s national health reform agenda, that’s why we’re investing at record levels in primary care, including in GP Super Clinics like this one in Ipswich,” Minister Roxon said.

“With 30 Super Clinics either open, providing early services or under construction, we are delivering benefits for patients and communities across the country.”

Local member Shayne Neumann said he was proud, but not surprised that Ipswich residents had pulled together to support each other during the floods.

“The Ipswich GP Super Clinic, like many other clinics across Queensland, got on with the job and ensured medical services were maintained throughout the flood crisis.”
Mr Neumann said staff from the clinic provided care at local evacuation centres, including the Riverview Neighbourhood House and the Ipswich Showgrounds, and offered vital support to the Ipswich General Hospital.

The Ipswich GP Super Clinic is operated by the University of Queensland and provides GP and nurse services as well as an urgent care clinic for people who cannot see their regular GP and who would otherwise have to go to the local hospital emergency department.

The second stage of construction of the clinic will further boost the pharmacy, pathology and radiology services offered, and will house additional GPs and allied health professionals, providing an even greater range of services to the Ipswich community.

The Labor Government provided $2.5 million to the University of Queensland to establish the Ipswich GP Super Clinic, as part of $528 million of funding to build 64 GP Super Clinics around Australia including 9 in Queensland.
