Residents and health professionals from the Mackay area are invited to share ideas this Friday about the best options for their local GP Super Clinic.

GP Super Clinics are at the heart of the Gillard Government’s efforts to make it easier for Australians to see a doctor, close to home.

With 30 Super Clinics either open, providing early services or under construction, we are delivering benefits for patients and communities across the country.
Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said that keeping Australians well and out of hospital is a priority for the Gillard Government’s national health reform agenda.

“That’s why we’re investing at record levels in primary care, including in GP Super Clinics like this one in Mackay, so that Australians can see and contact a health professional when they need to, helping to relieve the pressure on local hospitals.

“We know there is no ‘one size fits all’ for GP Super Clinics, so we are encouraging Mackay residents to team up with health professionals and share ideas about the best options for their local GP Super Clinic,” Minister Roxon said.

Senator for Queensland, Jan McLucas, said that Mackay’s rapidly growing community and shortage of doctors made it an ideal site for a GP Super Clinic.

“Mackay is one of the fastest growing communities in Queensland and this has significantly increased the need for health services.

“I encourage local residents, doctors and other health workers, and anyone who has an interest in this project to attend the information session. We want to make sure the community is involved in identifying local health needs and service priorities for their GP Super Clinic,” Senator McLucas said.

“The GP Super Clinic is an exciting project for Mackay. The model has a greater focus on health promotion and illness prevention – keeping people healthy and out of hospital.”

The Gillard Government will provide up to $7 million to establish the Mackay GP Super Clinic, as part of $528 million of funding to build 64 GP Super Clinics around Australia.

A register of interested parties has been established to help people to receive further information as it becomes available. Requests to be included on the register should be emailed to gpsuperclinics@health.gov.au. Further information is also available at: www.health.gov.au/gpsuperclinics.

The Mackay GP Super Clinic Consultation will be held at Mackay Grande Suites Hotel, 9 Gregory Street, Mackay, from 6.30pm – 8.30pm on Friday 11 March 2011.
