Residents from Burnie and surrounds will enjoy greater access to GPs and health professionals closer to home, Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said at the 10th GP Super Clinic opening in Burnie today.

The GP Super Clinics program is at the heart of the Gillard Government’s efforts to make it easier for Australians to see a doctor when they need to and closer to home.

Burnie is the 10th GP Super Clinic now open around the country with 30 either open, providing early services, or under construction.

“The Burnie GP Super Clinic will be home to 5 GPs, 4 nurses, a podiatrist, and a pathologist with more allied health services to come online including an occupational therapist, a wellbeing therapist, an optician, a psychologist and audiology services,” Ms Roxon said.

Minister Roxon said that because of an ageing population and a shortage of local GPs and health professionals, Burnie is an ideal site for this new GP Super Clinic.

“This GP Super Clinic is going to make it easier for the Burnie community to access quality health care close to home.”

Member for Braddon Sid Sidebottom MP said that key health investments on the North West Coast of Tasmania were making a real difference for the local community.

“The GP Super Clinic is a great win for Burnie in an area where medical services and facilities are in such high demand,” Mr Sidebottom said.

“The Burnie GP Super Clinic will provide a range of much needed local services including general practice, nursing, physiotherapy, dietetics, family health, skin care and immunisation and have a focus on preventative medicine and chronic disease management. New pharmacy services are also next door for convenience.

“Importantly, the broad range of services on offer at the clinic will help ease the burden on the Emergency Department of the North West Regional Hospital.”

The Burnie GP Super Clinic is run by Burnie Super Clinic Pty Ltd and is open from 8.30 am to 9.00 pm, Monday to Friday and from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm on weekends, with the clinic also participating in an After Hours GP Assist Program.

The Gillard Government committed $2.5 million to the Burnie GP Super Clinic. The Gillard Government is making a significant investment in the GP Super Clinics program and has committed $528 million to build 64 GP Super Clinics around Australia, including GP Super Clinics in Clarence, Sorrell and Devonport.
