3 March 2011

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, has completed the approvals for applications from all insurers, following further negotiations with Australian Unity––the final insurer to have its revised premium approved.

Australian Unity’s approved average increase will now be 4.91 per cent.

Following this agreement, the average increase across all insurers has now been adjusted slightly down to 5.56 per cent.

The increase for all private health insurance will take effect on 1 April and the average increase of 5.56 per cent is lower than last year (5.78 per cent), lower than CPI increases in hospital and medical services and it is significantly less than the last four years of Tony Abbott’s time as health minister, where the average increase was 6.44 per cent.

For more information, contact Ms Roxon’s Office: (02) 6277 7220

Note: For further information on the private health insurance premium changes, please refer to the Minister’s media release on 25 February 2011.
