Health students at the University of Tasmania will now have better access to clinical training through a new Commonwealth-funded IT management system, to be run in conjunction with the Department of Health and Human Services.

Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon today announced $478,000 in funding toward this project as part of the Gillard Government’s $5.9 million investment in Tasmanian clinical training for our future health workforce which will provide for 12,272 clinical placement days.

“Today’s announcement is just one more example of how the Gillard Government is investing in our health workforce, helping to future-proof our health and hospital system,” Ms Roxon said.

“This capital funding will be provided to the University of Tasmania and the Department of Health and Human Services to help build an IT support network for students between the University and health care facilities in Tasmania.

The $478,000 investment, to be allocated by Health Workforce Australia, will complement recently announced investments for the training of over 8,400 additional health students across 22 health professions in Australia.

Minister Roxon also visited the site of Stage 2 of the building of the new health and medical research facility that has received nearly $45 million over 5 years from the Australian Government through its Health and Hospitals Fund.

“We recognise the importance of embedding clinical training and clinical service in a rich evidence base,” Minister Roxon said

Ultimately, both of these projects will help to support better training and research for health professionals in Tasmania – and that’s good news for Tasmanians.

“Health students and researchers from University of Tasmania will now be able to train and work in state of the art facilities, bringing together clinical training, health research and clinical services”, Ms Roxon said.

The Gillard Government is investing more than ever before in the health workforce, including $1.1 billon to support clinical training and to establish Health Workforce Australia to improve national planning, drive reform and coordinate new support arrangements across the health professions.

The Gillard Governments investments in our health workforce is helping to get doctors, nurses and allied health professionals into communities where they are needed most.
