Personally controlled electronic health records are a step closer following the call for partners to help develop the system.
Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said it was an exciting opportunity to be involved in revolutionising the health system.
“The Gillard Government is committed to modernising our health system and ensuring its future sustainability through our multi-billion dollar reforms and e-health is a critical component of this.
“Personally Controlled Electronic Health Records (PCEHR) will save patients from repeating their medical history each time they see a new health professional”, Minister Roxon said.
“The request for tenders for a National Change and Adoption Partner and National Infrastructure Partners, demonstrates that the Government is on track to deliver a national PCEHR system to benefit all Australians,”
Minister Roxon said that these tenders will put in place the essential processes and technology to run the system across Australia.
“This tender process underlines our determination to ensure that by 1 July next year, Australians who want to register for a personal e-health record can do so.”
The National Change and Adoption Partner will be contracted to the Department of Health and Ageing to develop a strategy and provide services to accelerate the adoption and uptake of the PCEHR system by the public and the healthcare sector.
The services are expected to include event, communications and change support, and the development of training and guidance materials in collaboration with the clinical community and software providers. The work is to be conducted nationally and the tender closes on 5 April 2011.
The National Infrastructure Partners will be contracted to develop and implement the information and communications technology infrastructure that the PCEHR system will be used Australia-wide.
The role will include developing, testing and implementing systems and the ICT solutions, products and interfaces needed to ensure that the PCEHR system functions smoothly, securely and efficiently. The tender closes on 22 March 2011.
“This call for tenders is crucial to ensuring the Government’s $466.7 million investment in the PCEHR system realises its full benefits, and does so in the most efficient and cost-effective way,” Ms Roxon said.
An industry briefing will be held in Sydney on 1 March 2011.Interested parties can access further information from http://www.health.gov.au/tenders
