Better coordinated healthcare for the Clarence community is on its way said the Commonwealth Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon while inspecting the Clarence GP Super Clinic construction site today.

The $5.5 million Clarence GP Super Clinic will provide multi-professional care, bringing together health providers from general practice, community health and allied health services in one convenient location.

When inspecting the construction site, Minister Roxon said the GP Super Clinic program was another example of the Gillard Government’s commitment to primary care - a central component to national health reform.

“Keeping Australians well and out of hospital is a priority for the Gillard Government’s national health reform agenda,” Ms Roxon said.

“That’s why we’re investing at record levels in primary care, including in GP Super Clinics like this one in Clarence, so that Australians can see and contact a health professional when they to, helping to relieve the pressure on local hospitals.

“Of course, the $20 billion worth of reforms announced by the Prime Minister last week also mean that if you do need to go to a hospital, you can be sure it will be better resourced with more beds and better care.”

Local member Julie Collins MP and Senator for Tasmania Carol Brown also praised the Clarence GP Super Clinic.
“The range of services that will be on offer to Clarence and Risdon Vale locals through this GP Super Clinic will help to meet the changing health needs of the community,” Ms Collins said.

“Already across Australia, the GP Super Clinic program has delivered over 265,000 services. I’m looking forward to the Clarence clinic opening so that Clarence locals can start adding to that number,” Senator Brown said.

In 2010-11, the Government committed $370 million for an additional 28 GP Super Clinics and around 425 Primary Care Infrastructure Grants to upgrade and extend existing general practices, primary care and community health services, and Aboriginal Medical Services. This builds on the Government’s initial investment of $280 million for 36 GP Super Clinics across Australia.

GP Super Clinics are a key element in the Government’s plan to improve access to health care and building a stronger primary health care system. They will provide a greater focus on health promotion and illness prevention, and better coordination between private GP services, community health and other state government health services.
