Senator The Hon Penny Wong
Senator for South Australia

14 February 2011

Residents and health professionals from the Mt Barker area are invited to share ideas tomorrow morning about the best options for their local GP Super Clinic.

The GP Super Clinics program is at the heart of the Gillard Government’s efforts to make it easier for Australians to see and contact a doctor when they need to.

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, said that the consultation is designed to ensure the Mt Barker GP Super Clinic will meet local needs.

“Mt Barker is one of the fastest growing communities in South Australia and this has significantly increased the need for health services,” Minister Roxon said.

Senator for South Australia Penny Wong said the Gillard Government is committed to working closely with the Adelaide Hills Division of General Practice and the local community to take pressure off the Mt Barker Hospital and deliver better local health services.

“We want to make sure the community is involved in identifying local health needs and service priorities for their GP Super Clinic,” Senator Wong said.

“These information and consultation sessions also offer residents a great opportunity to ask general information about the GP Super Clinics program and funding processes.”

The Gillard Government will provide up to $7 million to establish the Mt Barker GP Super Clinic, as part of the funding for 28 additional GP Super Clinics provided in the 2010-11 Budget.

A register of interested parties has been established to help people to receive further information as it becomes available. Requests to be included on the register should be e-mailed to gpsuperclinics@health.gov.au. Further information is also available at: www.health.gov.au/gpsuperclinics

The Mt Barker GP Super Clinic Consultation will be held at Wallis Auchendarroch House from 7.30 am – 9.00 am.
