The Bundaberg region is a step closer to getting a GP Super Clinic with construction set to start this week following the announcement that Jeff Lennox Builder Pty Ltd has won the contract to construct the new facility
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, said the $5 million Bundaberg GP Super Clinic will be operated by Bundaberg Health Promotions Ltd and located on the corner of Branyan and Crofton Streets in the emerging medical precinct in West Bundaberg.
“GP Super Clinics are a key part of the Gillard Government’s commitment to make it easier to see a health professional closer to home, when you need one”, Ms Roxon said.
“This clinic will provide a range of services in the Bundaberg community, including additional GPs, nurse practitioners, a physiotherapist, psychologist and dietician and audiologist.
“Some of the regions biggest builders competed for the contract and I am pleased to see a local builder awarded the contract, providing jobs for the local community.”
Ms Roxon explained the Gillard Government is committing $5 million to establish the Bundaberg clinic, which will be one of 16 GP Super Clinics to be located in Queensland.
In 2010-11, the Government committed $370 million for an additional 28 GP Super Clinics and around 425 Primary Care Infrastructure Grants to upgrade and extend existing general practices, primary care and community health services, and Aboriginal Medical Services. This builds on the Government’s initial investment of $280 million for 36 GP Super Clinics across Australia.
GP Super Clinics are a key element in the Government’s plan to improve access to health care and building a stronger primary health care system. They will provide a greater focus on health promotion and illness prevention, and better coordination between private GP services, community health and other state government health services.
