Thirteen communities across the country are being invited to share ideas about the best options for GP Super Clinics in their local areas.
GP Super Clinics are playing a key role in the Gillard Government’s efforts to make it easier for Australians to see and contact a doctor when they need to.
“There is no ‘one size fits all’ for GP Super Clinics, so we are encouraging local residents to team up with health professionals and share ideas about the best options for their local GP Super Clinic”, Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon said.
“We want to work closely with local communities to make sure their GP Super Clinic offers the right services for their particular local needs.”
In commissioning 28 new GP Super Clinics, the Gillard Government is conducting 13 consultation sessions for communities where local members requested further community consultation for their GP Super Clinic.
Applications to operate the other 15 new GP Super Clinics closed in December 2010 and assessments of those applications are currently underway.
GP Super Clinic community consultations are planned to be held in:
- West Pilbara (Karratha), WA, on Monday, 31 January 2011
- The Gold Coast, Qld, on Thursday, 3 February 2011
- The Sunshine Coast, Qld, on Friday, 4 February 2011
- Adelaide, SA, on Monday, 14 February 2011
- Mount Barker, SA, on Tuesday, 15 February 2011
- Darwin, NT, on Friday, 18 February 2011
- The Lower Hunter, NSW, on Monday, 7 March 2011
- Townsville, Qld, on Thursday, 10 March 2011
- Mackay, Qld, on Friday. 11 March 2011.
“These information and consultation sessions also offer communities a great opportunity to ask general information about the GP Super Clinics program and funding processes,” Ms Roxon said.
In 2010, the Government committed $370.2 million for 28 GP Super Clinics and upgrades to around 425 general practices, primary care and community health services, and Aboriginal Medical Services. This followed the Government’s 2007 $280 million commitment to build 36 GP Super Clinics around the nation over five years. Twenty-seven of these are either operational, providing early services or under construction.
