The Grafton region is a step closer to getting a GP Super Clinic with the announcement that National Build Plan Group has won the contract to construct the new facility.
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, said the clinic operator, Ochre Health, had signed a contract with National Build Plan Group to build the clinic on the corner of Clarence and Fitzroy Streets, close to Grafton town centre.
“Many of the region’s biggest builders competed for the contract, which will provide local sub-contractors and suppliers with work over the next nine months,” Ms Roxon said.
“Building the Grafton GP Super Clinic will help make it easier for the people of Grafton to see and contact a medical professional when they need one.
“With an additional six GPs, a range of allied health professionals and other services, the Grafton GP Super Clinic will be a great asset for the local community.
“When completed, the clinics will have more than 24 consulting suites, treatment rooms, and space to hold clinics and self-management courses to assist people with chronic disease.
Ms Roxon explained the Gillard Government is committing $5 million to establish the Grafton clinic, which will be one of 20 GP Super Clinics to be located in New South Wales.
In 2010-11, the Government committed $370 million for an additional 28 GP Super Clinics and around 425 Primary Care Infrastructure Grants to upgrade and extend existing general practices, primary care and community health services, and Aboriginal Medical Services. This builds on the Government’s initial investment of $280 million for 36 GP Super Clinics across Australia.
GP Super Clinics are a key element in the Government’s plan to improve access to health care and building a stronger primary health care system. They will provide a greater focus on health promotion and illness prevention, and better coordination between private GP services, community health and other state government health services.
