The continuation of the Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care (PICAC) program will equip aged care services to deliver culturally appropriate aged care to people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
The Gillard Labor Government is providing $5 million to continue the PICAC program for the next 3 years.
The Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler today congratulated the eight successful organisations which will deliver the PICAC program in each state and territory. These organisations will work collaboratively with aged care providers, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities and the Department of Health and Ageing to improve access to culturally appropriate aged care services.
“More than one in five Australians was born overseas, so it is essential that our aged care system has the services available to meet their needs,” Mr Butler said.
“Overseas-born Australians can experience difficulties getting access to aged care due to language and cultural barriers.
“The eight successful organisations selected to deliver the PICAC program will work with aged care providers to improve their connections to culturally and linguistically diverse communities.”
The organisations will deliver training, information sessions and workshops to providers and their staff to help them develop the necessary training and skills for culturally appropriate care.
“I’d like to congratulate the eight organisations on their appointment to the PICAC program, and look forward to their progress to ensure older Australians have greater access to culturally appropriate aged care services,” Mr Butler said.
