Burnie Regional Cancer Centre a Big Step Closer
Acting Minister for Health and Ageing Mark Butler and Federal Member for Braddon Sid Sidebottom, have welcomed the release of an independent report supporting the establishment of a fully equipped cancer centre in Burnie.

8 July 2011Acting Minister for Health and Ageing Mark Butler and Federal Member for Braddon Sid Sidebottom, today welcomed the release of an independent report supporting the establishment of a fully equipped cancer centre in Burnie.
The report is the work of a clinical expert panel, appointed by the Tasmanian Government, which was asked to provide independent advice on how best to provide high quality and sustainable radiotherapy for Tasmania’s North West region.
“The expert panel’s advice supports the establishment of a radiotherapy service and installation of a linear accelerator at the proposed North West Regional Cancer Centre in Burnie,” Mr Butler said.
“The Gillard Government is committed to establishing a Regional Cancer Centre in Burnie and this report takes us a big step closer to delivering on our election commitment.
The report will now be forwarded to the Health and Hospitals Fund Advisory Board who requested a copy of the report to assist in making a final recommendation to the Government. Under legislation, it is necessary for the Board to find the project eligible for funding, in order for the Commonwealth to deliver the funding amount.
Mr Butler said that the Government looks forward to receiving the Board’s recommendations in the near future.
Local Federal Member for Braddon Sid Sidebottom MP said the expert panel’s advice was an important step towards the establishment of the Burnie Regional Cancer Centre.
“The findings of the expert panel are great news for our region,” Mr Sidebottom said.
“As a result, people on the North West and West Coasts can look forward to having access to a high quality, comprehensive and sustainable cancer care services, a goal Federal Labor has shared with this community for a number of years.
The Independent Clinical Expert Panel was chaired by Professor Michael Barton and included experts with national and international reputations in regional radiotherapy service development as well as local consumer representative, Royce Fairbrother
