South Australian aged care organisations will receive more than $ 900,000 for 284 Clinical and Graduate Nurse Placements as part of a nationwide boost to aged care training and study opportunities.

The Gillard Labor Government is rolling out 1,300 new clinical and graduate nurse placements nationwide over four years, the Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, Mark Butler announced during a visit to Helping Hand Aged Care in Adelaide In addition, 700 aged care nursing scholarships will be offered to students commencing study in 2012.

“Our ageing population has led to significant growth in the aged care sector–– which now provides care for a million older people in residential care, as well as in their own homes,” Mr Butler said.

“Improved and increased training opportunities for the next generation of aged care nurses will enhance the quality of clinical care in aged care facilities and ensure older Australians in these facilities enjoy a higher quality of life.”

More than $7.5 million in grants has been provided to aged care organisations for 950 clinical and 350 graduate nurse placements. Helping Hand Aged Care will receive more than $400,000 for 84 Clinical and Graduate Nurse Placements.

“The opportunity to take part in a clinical or graduate nurse placement provides our future aged care nurses with positive and practical experience, helps them develop career pathways and provides them with a foundation to pursue successful careers in aged care nursing,” Mr Butler said.

The Government also announced its ongoing support for the next generation of aged care nurses with the 2012 round of aged care scholarships opening on Friday.

“Aged care nursing scholarships provide valuable assistance to people considering careers in aged care and form a critical component of our effort to boost the aged care workforce,” Mr Butler said.

“Around 395 undergraduate, 310 postgraduate and 10 nurse practitioner scholarships will be offered to students commencing studies in 2012.

“This means financial assistance of up to $30,000 will be provided to more than 700 students.”

The scholarships will be delivered by the Royal College of Nursing Australia.

Through the Aged Care Workforce Fund, more than $300 million over 4 years is being allocated to support a skilled aged care workforce.

Highly trained and qualified aged care workers are essential for the delivery of quality aged care which is why the Gillard Labor Government is investing in further learning and development and in the recruitment and retention of aged care nurses.
