2 April 2011 Valuable training in business and management is again being offered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Australian Government continues its commitment to improving employment opportunities for Indigenous communities and better delivery of aged and primary healthcare services in remote and rural Australia.
Minister for Indigenous Health Warren Snowdon and Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler announced today the Australian Government would provide an additional 50 traineeships in 2011-12 under the $15.7 million Indigenous Remote Service Delivery program.
The traineeship positions under the second round of funding for the program is being advertised nationally today.
The program is part of the National Partnership on Indigenous Economic Participation, which aims to create a total of up to 2,000 new jobs and 400 new traineeships.
“These are great opportunities for Indigenous Australians in remote areas of the country, who have difficulty getting into the workforce, to begin a structured career, starting with Certificate 1 in Business and going through to the Advance Diploma in Management,” Mr Snowdon said.
Mr Butler welcomed the additional places the traineeships will create for the aged care workforce.
“These traineeships not only tackle the significant barriers to employment and training in remote areas, they provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with the opportunity to gain employment in the aged and primary health care services in their community,” Mr Butler said.
"As well, they will assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to access the aged care services they need in a culturally appropriate setting.”
Government-funded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aged care and primary healthcare services can apply for the funding until 6 May through the Department of Health and Ageing.
Forty-two aged care and primary healthcare services were successful under the first round of funding under the Indigenous Remote Service Delivery traineeships.
Guidelines for applying the IRSD traineeships are available through the Tender and Grants link of the Department of Health and Ageing website.
