Older South Australians who live in their own homes will benefit this year from a $12 million boost to aged care services provided to them across the state through the Home and Community Care (HACC) program - a joint initiative of the Federal and State Government.

Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler said the Gillard Government contributed $7.5 million, and the South Australian Government $4.6 million - and this represents a 7.5 per cent increase in funding on the previous year.

“Of this extra funding, $9.3 million will be used to expand HACC services across South Australia, while the remaining $2.8 million will be used to meet the increasing costs of providing services that are currently available to South Australians.”

“More frail, older people and younger people with a disability will be able to remain in their own homes and communities as a result of the increased funding”, he said.

More than $174 million has been committed to the HACC program in South Australia in 2010–11.

Ms Rankine said that each year in South Australia more than 95,000 people received domestic help, nursing, allied health care such as physiotherapy and podiatry, delivered meals, social support and personal care under HACC.

“More than 145 organisations delivering HACC services across the state also benefit from the funding. This will enable people to receive affordable care to help them with every day tasks and maintain their independence,” she said.

Mr Butler said the HACC program is a key element of the Gillard Government’s aged-care policy and its vision for a world-class community care system.

In 2010 – 2011, more than $2 billion will be provided for the HACC Program nationally. Of this, the Government will provide more than $1.2 billion, and the states and territories will contribute more than $800 million.
