One hundred and thirty university graduates will benefit from $10.2 million of Australian Government scholarships.

Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler announced the winners of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Postgraduate Scholarships today.

The scholarships have been provided to graduates in medicine, nursing, dentistry, allied health and other areas support their Masters and PhD studies - the foundations of a career in research.

Mr Butler said that today’s postgraduate students are tomorrow’s health and medical researchers.

“For Australia to successfully face the health challenges of an ageing population, growing obesity-related chronic disease and potential climate change we must ensure we continue to produce the cutting edge research that comes from a highly skilled research workforce.

“I am particularly pleased to announce three successful applicants in Indigenous Health who will work to bridge the gap between health outcomes for Indigenous and other Australians.

“The successful applicants for these Postgraduate Scholarships can take pride in knowing that they were in the top 45% of a highly competitive field,” he said.

Of the 130 NHMRC Post Graduate Scholarships, 69 will go to Victoria, 38 to NSW, eight to Queensland, seven to SA, 3 to both the NT and ACT and two to WA.

Scholarships are available to students enrolled in a research-based post graduate degree, for a period of up to three years.
