24 January 2011 People with dementia and their families will soon have access to a new Dementia Day Centre in Camden.
Member for Camden, Geoff Corrigan today inspected construction of the new $1.22 million Centre which is being built on the old Broughton House site.
“When finished, the new Centre will have the increased capacity to care for 18 clients, six more than the previous centre,” Mr Corrigan said.
“The Centre is purpose-built to accommodate the needs of dementia clients with wheelchair access and a secure garden setting in a soothing, calming environment.
“Clients can access a number of group leisure and recreation activities, giving them a choice of which activity they’d prefer to participate in.
“The Centre will also have stronger links to Camden Hospital, providing clients with faster access to specialist staff in the case of medical emergencies,” Mr Corrigan said.
Enhanced services will include a room where clients can lie down to rest if they’re feeling tired, a separate lounge and dining room and a quiet room for carers to have meetings with staff or receive counselling.
Federal Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler said dementia was one of the fastest growing sources of disease for older people, and the third leading cause of death, after heart disease and stroke.
“In NSW, the number of people with dementia is projected to increase four-fold from approximately 88,000 in 2010 to 341,000 in 2050.
“Each year nearly 26,000 new cases of dementia are diagnosed in NSW.
“By 2050 this will increase to 116,000 new cases per year. This is why centres, like the new Dementia Day Care Centre in Camden, are vital in helping us to respond to the needs of people with dementia and their families and carers,” Mr Butler said.
Mr Corrigan said that through the NSW Dementia Services Framework 2010-2015, the state government gave its commitment to working with the Commonwealth to improve outcomes for people with dementia.
Work on the Dementia Day Centre is progressing with the project reaching lock up stage. Internal fit-out has commenced and external works are being undertaken concurrently to construct access ramps and the client drop off area.
The new Centre is jointly funded by the NSW and Commonwealth Governments.
