A concise and user-friendly information directory that outlines the many Government services available for older people and their families has been launched today.
Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler said the Australian Government Directory of Services for Older People 2011 is more comprehensive than those of previous years and provides easily accessible information on the numerous Government programs and services available to older people.
“More departments and agencies have contributed to this year’s edition of Australian Government Directory of services for Older People 2011. It covers programs and services from Australian Government departments such as health, options for care, legal rights, finance choices and employment choices,” he said.
“It is also easier to read through a simpler layout and grouping of entries.
“We have also kept many features the same, such as larger type making it easier to read, the chapter tabs that make it easier to find the right page and the spiral binding,” Mr Butler said.
The Directory reflects the Gillard Government’s commitment to delivering quality services and support to older Australians when and where they need it.
Mr Butler said that Australians have one of the world’s highest life expectancy rates, and the number of Australians aged over 65 will almost triple, from 3.1 million today to around 7.6 million in 2051.
“The Gillard Government is committed to supporting older people to remain healthy and independent for as long as possible, and provides an extensive network of services to provide assistance to older Australians and their families.
“Over the next four years the Government will provide more than $47 billion for aged care, including $10.8 billion in 2010–11”.
The directory is now available free of charge by contacting the Aged Care Information Line on 1800 500 853 and online at www.health.gov.au. Copies are also available through Centrelink offices.

Help with accessing large documents
When accessing large documents (over 500 KB in size), it is recommended that the following procedure be used:
- Click the link with the RIGHT mouse button
- Choose "Save Target As.../Save Link As..." depending on your browser
- Select an appropriate folder on a local drive to place the downloaded file
Attempting to open large documents within the browser window (by left-clicking)
may inhibit your ability to continue browsing while the document is
opening and/or lead to system problems.
Help with accessing PDF documents
To view PDF (Portable Document Format) documents, you will need to have a PDF reader installed on your computer. A number of PDF readers are available through the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) Web Guide website.
