Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler congratulates equal rights campaigner Professor Ron McCallum AO who received this year’s Senior Australian of the Year award.
Mr Butler said that Professor McCallum was an outstanding role model who had made a significant contribution to the welfare of Australia.
“Professor McCallum has fervently pursed equal rights across the country and is widely regarded for his executive leadership in the disabled community. I am pleased that such an extraordinary advocate is being recognised in this way,” he said.
Mr Butler added that the Australian Government shares Professor McCallum’s concerns about equal rights and that this has been reflected by the Gillard Government recently establishing the position of the Age Discrimination Commissioner.
“This important position has been created to advocate for the rights of all Australians, including older people, who are susceptible to age discrimination in the community and workplace.
“The Age Discrimination Commissioner will begin duties on 1 July 2011 and tackle age discrimination by educating the community about discrimination and combating the attitudes and stereotypes that can contribute to discrimination.”
Mr Butler said the Senior Australian of the Year award showcased and celebrated the achievements of older Australians.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to recognise older Australians who have so much to offer, not just to friends and family, but to the wider community.”
Professor McCallum was presented with his award by Prime Minister Gillard at Parliament House, Canberra on Tuesday night.
