A Food Innovation workshop in Werribee today attracted more than 120 participants from government, the food industry and research organisations to share ways to make Australian food healthier. The workshop showcased the work of the Australian Government Food and Health Dialogue.
Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King said, “The Dialogue was established in March 2009 following a 2007 children’s nutrition and physical activity survey which found that the dietary patterns of many Australian children are less than optimal with high consumption of salt and saturated fat, and low consumption of fruit and vegetables.”
The Dialogue, chaired by Ms King, negotiates agreed reformulation targets with industry representatives to achieve better dietary intakes.
She said, “These workshops will share national and international information and experience in reformulation, including approaches to improving the nutritional profile of products, technical challenges and product case studies.”
Ms King noted the increasing demand from consumers for healthier products and praised those members of industry making steps toward meeting these demands.
A further two workshops are being held in Sydney and Brisbane on 25 and 27 October respectively.
Ms King today launched the new Food and Health Dialogue e-newsletter to complement its new web site. The e-newsletter will be sent to members of industry, public health groups and other relevant stakeholders, to keep them informed of progress under the Dialogue.
Subscription to the e-newsletter can be arranged by contacting the Dialogue secretariat at foodandhealthdialogue@health.gov.au
