A new Community Health Centre at Merino in Western Victoria, funded with the assistance of the National Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure Program, was officially opened today by Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing, Catherine King.

The $870,000 project, completed with $500,000 from the Gillard Government under the program and $370,000 from the State through the Western District Health Service, will ensure long-term access to quality health care for the Merino and district community.

Ms King said the Community Health Centre will provide for primary nursing, district nursing, planned activity groups, a half-day per week general practitioner clinic and a visiting monthly podiatry, dietetics and diabetes educator from the Glenelg Outreach Centre.

“This new, purpose built primary care facility will provide a range of medical, nursing, allied health and community health services to the Merino district,” Ms King said.

“The modern, well-designed and -equipped facilities should attract, retain and increase the range of visiting health services available in this region.”

Ms King said the Gillard Government was proud to partner with the Western Districts Health Service to deliver the new centre.

“The National Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure Program is aimed at improving access to health services in rural and remote communities through the establishment of new – or enhancement of existing – walk-in, walk-out primary health care facilities,” Ms King said.

“The program, together with the Health and Hospitals Fund, is part of a larger nation-building agenda to invest in Australia’s long-term future and to strengthen the Australian economy.”

Under the Health and Hospitals Fund, $1.8 billion has been committed to regional health infrastructure through the 2011-12 Budget, bringing total allocation under the fund so far to $4.5 billion over three rounds for 148 projects.

A further $0.5 billion has been dedicated to a new regional round due to open shortly.

“The Australian Government is committed to building Australia’s health infrastructure and the Merino Community Health Centre is the latest important part of that strategy for the future,” Ms King said.

“We want to ensure that all Australians get the health care they need, when they need it and regardless of where they live.”
