The Australian community's access to authoritative information about the safety of medicines and medical devices will be greatly enhanced with the launch today of a revamped Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) website.

Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing, Catherine King, said the revamped site is designed to clearly explain how prescription, over the counter and complementary medicines, along with medical devices are regulated.

“The TGA is one of the most respected medicines' regulators in the world but for far too long its assessment processes have been too inaccessible to the public,” Ms King said.

“I expect that the redesigned TGA website will be welcomed by consumers, health professionals and industry.”

The TGA website has been completely redesigned and rebuilt, with improved navigation and organisation of content to ensure all audience groups will find it easier to access the information they need.

Ms King said the TGA has conducted extensive external consultation and testing and the revamped site reflects a growing commitment to making important information about therapeutic goods more widely available.

"In November last year I announced a comprehensive review of the way in which the TGA communicates its regulatory processes and decisions. The review is focusing on improving the TGA's transparency,” Ms King said.

"The purpose of the review is to improve public knowledge of regulatory decision-making and to improve public understanding of the benefits and risks of therapeutic goods.

“We want the Australian community to understand how the TGA operates and the reasons for its key decisions. The redevelopment of the TGA website is an important step toward this goal.”

Throughout 2011 the TGA will continue to improve its website by increasing the use of email alerts and improving search functionalities.
