Many more patients around Australia can expect a boost in the services provided by their local GP practice thanks to a new round of primary care infrastructure grants that open for application this weekend.
Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King said this $52.5 million round of grants would build on the success of the 2010 round of 240 grants announced in November last year.
"We want to make it easier for Australians to see a doctor when they need to,” Ms King said.
“These grants will help local doctors to expand the services they offer to their communities.
“About 200 grants will be available through this $52.5 million grant round and I encourage GPs from around the country to apply.”
Primary care infrastructure grants can be used to upgrade or extend existing premises, such as by constructing specialised practice nurse facilities, clinical training rooms, treatment rooms fitted with the latest medical equipment, rooms for patients to attend preventative health education sessions, and facilities that support extended hours of service.
The 2011-12 round will be advertised on 16 April 2011 and at least one-third of the total funding available for the Primary Care Infrastructure Grants will be provided to regional and remote Australia, reflecting the Government’s commitment to improve access to better health services in regional Australia.
The primary care infrastructure grants are part of the Government’s 2010-11 Budget commitment of $370.2 million over three years to improve primary health care infrastructure. The commitment includes up to $233 million for additional GP Super Clinics.
There are three types of primary care infrastructure grants, with grants of up to $150,000 each; up to $300,000 each and up to $500,000 each.
